The area: a banana port with a long memory
Puerto Armuelles owes its existence to bananas. In 1927 the United Fruit Company began producing bananas on Panama's Pacific side and building the town, and the port grew through the 1930s to ship the fruit. Its operating company here was the Chiriquí Land Company, a United Fruit subsidiary that later became part of Chiquita Brands. For decades the pier was western Chiriquí's gateway to export markets and the plantations were the main source of work across the region.
The town takes its name from Colonel Tomás Armuelles, who died during the Coto War with Costa Rica in 1921. Locals also call it the Ciudad de las Arenas, the city of sands.
The banana era ended early this century. After years of decline and labour conflict, Chiquita withdrew from Barú in 2003 and sold its assets to a workers' cooperative, and the local economy contracted sharply. The census population of Puerto Armuelles fell from 22,755 in 2000 to 12,249 in 2023.
Two other pieces of infrastructure shaped the area. From the 1970s an oil terminal was built at Charco Azul, south of the town, and a pipeline completed in 1982 links it across the isthmus to Chiriquí Grande on the Caribbean. More recently the Caja de Seguro Social opened a new hospital in the town in 2022, and the Autoridad Marítima de Panamá is building a new multipurpose pier to replace the old one.
Today Puerto Armuelles is a quiet, working coastal town rather than a resort, and that is much of its appeal: long beaches, a sea that still sets the rhythm, and a town that lives for itself rather than for visitors.
Nature and the outdoors
South of town, the Burica peninsula runs out into the Pacific. It is shared with Costa Rica, and its tip, Punta Burica, is on the Panamanian side, in the corregimiento of Limones in Barú. The forested hills and fishing communities of the peninsula are reached by road from Puerto Armuelles.
East along the coast, the Gulf of Chiriquí National Marine Park was created in 1994 and covers 14,740 ha, about nine-tenths of it sea. It protects 44 islands, islets and cays, including Parida, Gámez and Bolaños, along with coral reefs and mangroves. MiAmbiente manages the park.
Humpback whales from the Southern Hemisphere visit Panama's Pacific waters from July to October to breed and raise their calves, and the Gulf of Chiriquí is one of the places they are seen. MiAmbiente publishes a whale-watching protocol that boat operators must follow.
Inland, Volcán Barú National Park was created in 1976 around Volcán Barú, at 3,475 m Panama's highest peak, and is known for its cloud forest and the resplendent quetzal. Further north, La Amistad International Park is shared with Costa Rica and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, inscribed in 1983 and extended to the Panamanian side in 1990; about 600 bird species have been recorded there.
What to do nearby
- Beach walks and surf. The beaches north and south of town are long and wide, backed by palms and farmland. Punta Burica has a reef break known to intermediate and experienced surfers.
- Gulf of Chiriquí. The marine park and its islands are known for big-game fishing, diving, snorkelling and whale watching.
- Whale season. From July to October, humpback whales can be seen off this coast.
- The Chiriquí highlands. Inland, the Tierras Altas have a spring-like climate of roughly 12 to 25 °C. The slopes around Boquete are Panama's coffee country and the home of its prized Geisha coffee, and the farms of Cerro Punta supply much of the country's vegetables.
- La Amistad and Volcán Barú. Trails, birdwatching and cloud forest in two of western Panama's major protected areas.
- Feria Internacional de David. Every March, David hosts its international fair, with agricultural and livestock shows, commerce, crafts and folklore; the 2026 edition was the 69th.
Daily life and services
Everyday shopping is done in Puerto Armuelles. For healthcare, the town has the Hospital Dionisio Arrocha of the Caja de Seguro Social, opened in 2022, with emergency care, operating rooms, specialist clinics and 97 beds, serving insured and uninsured residents of western Chiriquí.
David, the capital of Chiriquí and the largest city outside the Panama City metropolitan area, is the regional centre for larger shops, government offices, specialists and private hospitals. The CSS regional hospital, Dr. Rafael Hernández, is in David, and in 2025 its surgical and specialist services began moving into a new specialty hospital centre beside it.
Getting here
- By air: Enrique Malek International Airport in David has domestic flights from Panama City.
- By road: The Pan-American Highway runs through David to the Costa Rican border at Paso Canoas; Puerto Armuelles is reached by road from the highway.
- By bus: Long-distance buses leave from the Albrook terminal in Panama City.
- To Costa Rica: Paso Canoas, on the Pan-American Highway, is the border crossing; a joint Panama–Costa Rica border control centre opened there in February 2024.
Seasons and climate
The dry season runs from about mid-December to April and the rainy season from May to November. On the coast it is warm all year, while the highlands are noticeably cooler, especially at night. Whale season runs from July to October, and David's international fair takes place in March.
